Calendar of Events
Below is the current calendar for programming. We are working with student leaders and community organizations to continue to shape the calendar and implement activities.
Descriptions of Events
School-wide distribution of books: Distributed to all students during 2nd hour on Monday, April 2. Each book will be handed out with a bookmark that includes the website and calendar of events.
Traveling Exhibit: Learn more about the students in Green Card Youth Voices by visiting the traveling exhibit that features their stories, available in the back of the Library until 4/11. Come with your class or on a pass.
Kick-off Event: Hear from the Executive Director of Green Card Voices, Dr. Tea Rozman-Clark, as she talks about the purpose of Green Card Youth Voices, how the stories are developed, and the power of storytelling. You’ll also have time to preview the traveling exhibit.
Book Discussion/Reading: Discuss themes and connections in Green Card Youth Voices with students, staff, and some special guests. Offered three times during the month, with different stories, themes, and questions each time.
Documentary Viewing: Watch a documentary focused on immigration with student-led discussion.
Geopolitical Realities of Immigration: Learn about the patterns of pushes and pulls around the world that lead to immigration. This presentation is hosted by the Social Studies department and is led by staff and students!
Circle Discussions: Participate in a Circle discussion about the book and the topic of American Identity. The circle will be grounded in the principles of Restorative Justice and facilitated by trained JMM students and staff.
JMM Immigrant Experience Panel: Learn about the experiences of your peers who have immigrated to the US. Hosted by Student Activist Club.
Guest Speaker Aissa I. Olivarez: Learn about how current policy affects immigrants living in this country. Ms. Olivarez is an immigration attorney through the Madison Community Immigration Law Center.
Author Reading and Q&A: Hear from the high school students that wrote this book! Two opportunities: an evening event on 4/11 and during second hour on 4/12. If you are interested in attending second hour, please get a pass from your 2nd hour teacher.
Writing Your Own Story Workshop: Share the story of your family's arrival in the United States. You will have the opportunity to share your story at the Celebration Potluck on Friday.
Latinx Immigrant Experience Panel: Learn from guest speakers Fabiola Hamdan, MSSW, Immigration Affairs Specialist and Karen Menéndez Coller, PhD, Executive Director of Centro Hispano of Dane County as they talk about the Latinx Immigrant Experience in Madison. Hosted by Latino Unidos.
Final Celebration: Community Potluck: Students, staff, and community members will be invited to a potluck to socialize and discuss the issues surrounding the book.
